Trostyanets in Sumy Oblast was under occupation and suffered significant destruction. Despite its proximity to the border and repeated shelling, the city is being rebuilt. How is funding being raised for this?
The city of Trostyanets in Sumy Oblast is only a few dozen kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the city survived a month of Russian occupation, and later suffered the greatest destruction from hostilities among the settlements of the Sumy Oblast.
At the same time, not only do 95 percent of local residents remain in Trostyanets, but thousands of displaced people are also finding new homes. According to the city council, not a single business has left since 2022, and children are studying in schools full-time, albeit in shelters.
In 2023, the city was included in an experimental government program for the comprehensive reconstruction of settlements that suffered significant destruction.
Additionally, support from international donors was attracted. At the same time, some houses in Trostiantsa were subjected to repeated shelling even after restoration.
