Momentum Wheels for Humanity Ukraine
Founded in 1996 as a grassroots initiative, Wheels for Humanity began with a mission to restore and distribute used wheelchairs to individuals in need around the world.
Driven by volunteers, wheelchairs were refurbished to manufacturers’ standards and delivered during international service trips. Professional occupational and physical therapists volunteered their expertise to ensure each wheelchair was custom fitted to the recipient’s needs. Between 1996 and 2006, more than 34,000 wheelchairs and other mobility aids were provided in 66 countries.
We have increasingly focused on advocacy efforts to influence the understanding and thinking of citizens, moving beyond awareness and toward inclusion. Wheels for Humanity has worked with local and national government ministries and agencies to create policies that improve the lives of people with disabilities, including promoting the implementation of WHO Guidelines on Wheelchair Provision,
These developments solidified Wheels for Humanity’s reputation as a leader in the global effort to improve mobility and self-sufficiency for people with disabilities, while also advocating for broader systemic changes to promote inclusion and accessibility.
Today, we continue to maintain our headquarters in Southern California with program activities in El Salvador and Ukraine. Our programs are implemented in coordination with a network of health care facilities and local organizations and supported by strong partnerships with government bodies, international agencies, and private donors.
