The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a Geneva-based, independent humanitarian institution that protects and assists victims of armed conflict. As the guardian of the Geneva Conventions, its mandate is to enforce international humanitarian law and provide neutral, impartial aid in war zones worldwide.
Key Functions and Responsibilities
- Protection of Civilians: Advocates for the rights of prisoners of war, detainees, and civilians caught in armed conflicts.
- Neutral Intermediary: Operates across front lines to negotiate access, facilitate the release of detainees, and arrange safe evacuations.
- Family Reunification: Helps locate missing persons and reconnects family members separated by violence.
- Relief Operations: Distributes emergency food, water, medicine, and medical equipment to affected regions in over 90 countries.
Global Network
The ICRC is an integral component of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, alongside the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and nearly 200 individual National Societies. While the ICRC focuses primarily on armed conflicts, the IFRC focuses on disaster response and development in peacetime.
