On November 25, 2024, German Ambassador to Ukraine Martin Jaeger visited the city of Trostyanets in Sumy Oblast. The visit to the border region was aimed at demonstrating support for the local community, learning about the consequences of the Russian occupation, and discussing the restoration of infrastructure with German participation.

    Highlights of the visit:

    • Support: Martin Jaeger’s visit highlights Germany’s active support for the reconstruction of Ukrainian communities affected by the war.
    • Damage survey: The Ambassador inspected sites damaged during the occupation.
    • Security context: The visit to the border region of Sumy is an important signal of support in the face of ongoing aggression.

During the meeting with Martin Jaeger, the mayor of Trostyanets, Yuriy Bova, expressed his gratitude for the support and assistance:

“I am grateful to the German government and the entire German people for the support provided to Ukraine in the fight against the Russian aggressor and in building a strong, democratic society. Your efforts in restoring destroyed hospitals, schools and infrastructure have become a symbol of unity, compassion and humanity. Germany has become for us an example of a nation that does not stand aside when the world faces tragedy. Today, Ukraine is fighting for the freedom and dignity of not only its land, but also of the entire democratic community. And your support gives us strength in this fight“.

Trostyanets was one of the first cities liberated in the Sumy region and is currently actively working on reconstruction.

Project Advisor “Special Support Program for Ukraine”/GIZ Ukraine Oleksandr Khoruzhenko noted:

“Trostyanets community has become a pilot in the implementation of such large-scale projects to restore the medical sector. At present, having made sure of the effectiveness of our measures and that it works effectively and brings benefits, we are implementing our projects in several more communities. In four more cities of the region, we have installed modular power plants on infrastructure facilities. We continue to cooperate with the Trostyanets City Council – a modular boiler house will be installed in the coming months. This will allow for economical heating of the city’s infrastructure facilities“.

Thanks to the project “EU Strong Regions Program – Special Support Program for Ukraine”, Trostyanets city hromada received assistance in the form of:

    • charging stations, modern computer and server equipment
    • mobile autonomous solar station BLUETTI
    • generators with a capacity of 3 to 38 kW
    • 3 mobile stations for purifying fresh water from rivers and lakes, wells and tanks for its storage with a volume of 500 and 1000 liters
    • 10 functional beds with mechanical adjustment of the angle of inclination
    • a modern mechanical operating table, a mobile C-arch apparatus, a gynecological chair, a laptop, a multifunctional device, a radio wave therapy device “Nadiya-4” and furniture for the office of a specialized doctor
    • with the funds of GIZ “EU Program “Resilient Regions” – Special Support Program for Ukraine” a mobile hospital was built and equipped with medical equipment
    • under the terms of co-financing, the Trostyanets community received funds from GIZ for insulation of the infectious disease ward
    • with the funds of GIZ, a 63 kW solar power plant was installed in the hospital, which ensures the uninterrupted operation of the modular hospital and some of the hospital departments

Other important and large-scale projects were also implemented within the framework of cooperation with German partners.

Municipal web-portal "Global Trostyanets" of Trostyanets city hromada was founded in May 2026 as a quick response and gratitude to all our international partners who helped our hromada survive after the occupation in 2022 and develop today. To some extent, this is a unique web resource, which has no analogues in Ukraine.

Trostyanets is becoming an example of high-quality reconstruction and resilience. Financial support from the state and international partners has given us the chance to restore the housing stock, equip premises for the accommodation of displaced persons, create modern medical institutions, launch the educational process, revive and develop the municipal sphere.

Today we have already demonstrated that restoration is not only about rebuilding buildings. It is the path to a qualitatively new level of life for municipality! We have become an example for the country and a convincing signal for foreign donors: aid brings tangible changes.
