Ukraine needs energy: for day-to-day life, for the economy and to defend itself against attacks by Russia. GIZ offers long-term support to Ukraine to expand decentralised energy infrastructures and also provide rapid assistance.

The full-scale invasion has now been raging in Ukraine for more than four years. Energy systems are a particularly frequent target, as Russia is carrying out systematic attacks on power plants and substations. As a result, power outages regularly bring infrastructures to a standstill that are crucial for survival. The unstable energy and heat supply is a threat to the country’s population, economy and medical care.

Ukraine is therefore focusing more closely on decentralised renewable energy sources and smaller energy systems. They are difficult to attack, reduce the country’s dependency on oil and gas – and lay the foundation for a future-proof, decentralised energy supply. GIZ supports Ukraine with these efforts – and has reached around 7.7 million people since 2022, who now have power and heat again.

That is why Trostyanets municiapl authorities are constantly working to increase energy independence by receiving generators and mini-power plants from partners and installing solar panels on infrastructure facilities. After all, all of this will help our community weather potential power outages, save budget funds, and develop as a modern community!

Today, a shipment of solar energy equipment was delivered to Trostyanets, which will help our city take the next step toward reducing its dependence on the centralized power grid and enable institutions and facilities to continue operating during power outages. It consists of two new solar power plants, each with a capacity of 38.75 kW, complete with inverters and batteries.

“One of these power stations will be installed at the Administrative Services Center so that, in the event of power outages, community residents can continue to obtain the documents they need without interruption or difficulty, while the other will strengthen the energy independence of the Trostyanets City Hospital”, – said Trostyanets Mayor Yuriy Bova. “We thank our trusted friends and partners at GIZ for their ongoing support! Your assistance has helped and continues to help us restore what was lost and destroyed during the occupation and hostilities, provide high-quality services to community residents, and rebuild and develop. We still have many ideas and plans ahead, which we will definitely implement together!”

This assistance came from the German company GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), which has repeatedly helped our community, including in the area of energy independence.

Municipal web-portal "Global Trostyanets" of Trostyanets city hromada was founded in May 2026 as a quick response and gratitude to all our international partners who helped our hromada survive after the occupation in 2022 and develop today. To some extent, this is a unique web resource, which has no analogues in Ukraine.

Trostyanets is becoming an example of high-quality reconstruction and resilience. Financial support from the state and international partners has given us the chance to restore the housing stock, equip premises for the accommodation of displaced persons, create modern medical institutions, launch the educational process, revive and develop the municipal sphere.

Today we have already demonstrated that restoration is not only about rebuilding buildings. It is the path to a qualitatively new level of life for municipality! We have become an example for the country and a convincing signal for foreign donors: aid brings tangible changes.
