The russian military aggression against Ukraine not only takes dozens of lives every day, but also causes significant damage to the physical and mental health of Ukrainians. The number of people who have been injured, contused, or traumatized by the war and need rehabilitation is increasing every day. This applies equally to both military and civilians.
Daily shelling, fear, pain, loss of loved ones, uncertainty that you will stay alive – these are all factors that have damaged the psychological state of Ukrainians. Every citizen of the community needs psychological support – that’s 26,814 people. This support is equally important for the military.
Therefore, Trostyanets city hromada’s authorities has identified improving the physical and psychological health of its citizens as one of its top priorities so that everyone affected by the war can recover and return to normal life as soon as possible.
The proposed project is aimed at creating conditions for the start of the basic operation of the rehabilitation department of the Trostyanets City Hospital and ensuring its functioning by carrying out the necessary repairs in the department’s premises.
The task of the project – to renovate part of the 2nd floor of the former children’s department of the hospital to ensure the initial operation of the rehabilitation department of the Trostyanets City Hospital.
A rehabilitation ward is a specialized hospital unit designed for patients recovering from serious injuries, surgeries, or illnesses (such as stroke, orthopaedic, or neurological conditions) to regain independence before returning home. These wards offer intensive, daily, multidisciplinary care, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy, tailored to improve functional levels.
Key features of a rehabilitation ward typically include:
- Multidisciplinary Team: Comprised of specialists including physiatrists, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and social workers.
- Active Recovery: Focused on enabling patients to regain mental and physical functions, often with a “recovery phase” approach
- Specialized Environment: Features may include gymnasiums, Independent Living Units (ILUs) for simulating home environments, and modified patient rooms with hoist systems
- Patient Focus: Primarily treats patients after stroke, trauma, neurological disorders, or major surgeries like joint replacements.
According to the Rehabilitation Ward – Data Dictionary, these wards may be dedicated units for rehabilitation or part of larger specialties like geriatrics or neurology. The main goal is to prepare individuals for community-based living or outpatient care.
Project objectives:
- Create a modern rehabilitation unit and provide the appropriate infrastructure to provide comprehensive rehabilitation services.
- Provide modern rehabilitation conditions by overhauling part of the 2nd floor of the former children’s department of the hospital.
- Increase the level of social adaptation and recovery of patients by providing comprehensive physical and psychological care.
Target audience of the project
- Military personnel who have sustained physical injuries and psychological trauma during combat operations and need specialized assistance to restore their health and psychological state, which will help them return to normal life after injuries and stress.
- Community citizens who have suffered physical and psychological trauma due to hostilities, shelling, loss of relatives or displacement.
- Families of military personnel and victims.

- Establishment of a rehabilitation unit at the Trostyanets City Hospital.
- Introduction of rehabilitation medical services in the community.
